Abstract

This paper presents a comparative analysis of two language textbooks, Hurra po polsku and Krížom-Krážom, with respect to the development of interactional competence. The study examines how each textbook integrates dialogue materials, communicative routines, and sociocultural elements into the learning process. The analysis also considers the potential of each textbook for independent learner use and the extent to which pragmatic skills are developed. The findings highlight differences in methodology, concerning the presentation of dialogues, and the inclusion of sociocultural components into teaching materials. Implications for language teaching and material selection are discussed, emphasizing the need for deliberate design to foster interactional competence effectively. Prevziať celé číslo

Abstract

The study examines whether Kant’s understanding of freedom as autonomy of the will leads to subjective arbitrariness or whether it contains rational limits that keep it within the bounds of moral normativity. The point of departure is an analysis of Kant’s conception of freedom as belonging to the “world of reason,” in which the human being is bound by the moral law and the categorical imperative. The text shows how pure practical reason constitutes the moral law and maxims as autonomously instituted principles of action, and how their binding force rests on the test of universality. Attention then shifts to the limits of autonomy in the context of social life, where individual freedom encounters the demands of coexistence, recognition, and shared norms. Within this framework, critical objections to Kantian ethics are developed, challenging its formalism, its separation of morality from a substantive conception of the good, and its presupposition of atemporal rationality. The study proceeds from the assumption that Kant’s position is most fruitfully understood as a form of procedural moral constructivism, in which universality does not lie in the specific content of maxims, but in the way they are rationally formed and reflexively revised. Abstract

This paper examines the theoretical framework of the role of social, cultural, and public institutions, as well as publishers, in the popularisation of translated literature in Slovakia after 1989. It assumes that the popularisation of translated literature constitutes a complex cultural process in which aesthetic, political, economic, and ideological factors intersect. In this context, translated literature is understood as a cultural asset whose social visibility, reception, and symbolic value are shaped by a network of institutional actors and their mediation strategies. The theoretical framework draws on translation studies, sociology of translation, and historical research, and is grounded in the notion of translation as a part of the cultural system. Particular attention is paid to the period following 1989, which represents a fundamental turning point in Slovak literary, cultural, and social life. Nevertheless, the popularisation of translated literature has received only limited attention in the Slovak context, and systematic research addressing it as a structured and historically conditioned phenomenon is largely absent. This paper, therefore, argues for a shift away from an exclusively text-oriented approach towards an analysis of the social and institutional functioning of translation. It does not aim to provide a comprehensive analysis of popularisation practices, but it seeks to establish a theoretical and methodological framework that will serve as a foundation for the forthcoming doctoral dissertation. Abstract

Online research on politically sensitive topics requires a reassessment of traditional ethical frameworks. The article analyzes three levels of ethical regulations: general documents on research ethics and integrity, specific recommendations for internet research, and legal norms for personal data protection. Four key dilemmas are at the center of attention: the distinction between public and private online space, collective vs. individual subjectivity, subject consent vs. research freedom, and anonymity vs. risk of re-identification. The analysis employs case studies and reflection on the author's own research practice, including the controversial reception of a paper on Russian language teachers' discourse and strategies for dissertation research on anti-war discourse in Russia. The application of the concept of ethics as a process running through all phases of research is demonstrated. The article points to the need to update institutional procedures, with an emphasis on contextuality, reflexivity, and practical wisdom (phronesis) in addressing ethical dilemmas in research on vulnerable groups on social media. Abstract

Matica slovenská entered history as the oldest nationwide cultural institution of the Slovaks (1863). Despite the institution’s associative character, the issue of its membership base in the years 1862 – 1875 has not yet been systematically researched and remains on the margins of historiographical interest. The aim of the paper is to provide a synthetic assessment of the significance of the membership base in fulfilling Matica slovenská’s programmatic tasks, to analyse the Statutes of Matica slovenská as its fundamental organisational document, and to reconstruct a comprehensive list of members for the nineteenth century. Membership will also be examined in terms of regional affiliation and social and occupational composition. Special attention is devoted to the network of local agents (jednateľstvá), which, after the rejection of regional branches, served to maintain contact between the central office, the membership, and the broader sympathetic public. The source base consists of heuristic research and analysis of documents held in the Archives of Matica slovenská in Martin, contemporary periodical press, memoirs, and personal papers of selected Matica representatives. Abstract

This paper’s goal is to reflect on how mapping student initiatives in Translation Studies can be conceptualised within a translation and interpreting ecosystem. Mapping is understood as situating student initiatives within the ecosystem, identifying typical connections to other nodes (e.g., universities, the market, agencies, professional bodies, publishers, and society), and outlining the types of activities through which such links are created and maintained. The paper introduces Actor-Network Theory (ANT) as a conceptual framework that treats organising as the assembling of heterogeneous relations and attributes agency to both human and non-human entities. To address textual and digital traces of organising, discourse analysis is proposed as a complementary approach, allowing organisational texts to be read as inscriptions and mediations in ANT terms. The emerging World Association of Student Initiatives in Translation Studies (FIESTI) is presented as an illustrative case of a collective in an early stage of formation, suitable for demonstrating the kinds of questions ANT brings forward. Abstract

This paper reflects on the essayistic work of Zora Jesenská, focusing on its didactic genre variant. On a theoretical level, the essay is defined as a “cognitive shortcut” that, through metaphorical processes, makes complex themes more accessible. It also serves as a tool of intentional literary action. The core of the study is an analysis of the essay The Musician and the Magic Box (1936), in which Jesenská responds to the phenomenon of the profanation of art resulting from technological progress. The research focuses on identifying core metaphors and communicative strategies used by the author to model her readership. The aim is to highlight Jesenská’s efforts toward national cultivation of culture and her appeal for authentic aesthetic experience. The analysis confirms that the axiological orientation and an empathetic approach to the recipient form the fundamental pillar of Jesenská’s essay writing, granting her work timeless relevance. Abstract

Wittgenstein proved the impossibility of private language, which has its roots in Cartesian psychological models. The fundamental problem that motivated Wittgenstein's reflections is the question of the possibility or impossibility of understanding other people's feelings. If these mental states are hidden from others, it is impossible to know them. Wittgenstein's model is social and based on shared normativity. However, when we enter the field of psychiatry, we encounter a deeper level of the question of how to understand the suffering of others. Psychosis is incomprehensible because it does not participate in shared normativity. This paper analyzes this problem. Its aim is to highlight the role of therapy in this context. Therapy has the potential to "make the private public" due to its ability to expand normativity and include non-standard cases of mental disorder. Prevziať celé číslo

Abstract

The paper focuses on the analysis of the morphosyntactic features of urbarial records from the territory of eastern Slovakia dating from the second half of the 18th century. Attention is directed towards the identification and description of deviations across individual parts of speech, as well as towards the characterisation of dominant syntactic constructions within administrative and legal2 discourse. The research highlights specific word order patterns and the frequent occurrence of elliptical and nominal constructions. Particular emphasis is placed on the influence of Latin and German syntactic models, as well as on the interference of regional dialectal elements. The analysis also takes into account the lack of stabilisation of the contemporary orthographic norm and individual scribal usage. The results contribute to a deeper understanding of the historical morphosyntax of Slovak and to a more nuanced interpretation of the relationship between administrative norms and contemporary language practice.
